When insurance does exactly what it’s designed to do

Disability Insurance Claim
A case study in Total Permanent Disability (TDP) Insurance and Income Protection

For many high-income professionals, insurance can feel like an expensive “just in case.”

But for one of our long-term clients, it became the difference between financial disruption and financial stability during one of life’s most challenging periods.

The background

Around 10 years ago, we started working with a successful Anaesthetist and his family to put in place a tailored protection strategy.

At the time:

  • He was the primary income earner
  • His wife was not working
  • They had built a strong lifestyle and financial position
  • Like many professionals, his future earning capacity was his greatest financial asset

Through a detailed needs analysis, we structured Total & Permanent Disability (TPD) and Income Protection cover based on their assets, liabilities, lifestyle needs and long-term financial objectives.

Importantly, they understood the purpose of insurance: not to create wealth, but to protect the life they had worked hard to build.

The unexpected

A decade later, at age 45, his health changed significantly and he was no longer able to continue working in his profession.

It was an incredibly difficult personal period for the family.

But financially, the preparation they had made years earlier changed everything.

The outcome

Because the appropriate cover had been maintained over time, the family received:

  • A TPD payout of more than $2 million
  • Ongoing monthly income protection benefits, initially around $30,000 per month and now indexed to approximately $42,000 per month
  • Continued support payments through to age 65

The financial impact of losing a high professional income was effectively neutralised.

We very much appreciate you all and how easy you make the management of our financial affairs and how much better things are for having you a part of our lives.

More than just a payout

The insurance proceeds allowed the family to focus on health, care and quality of life — rather than financial pressure.

Their home was renovated and redesigned to better support his ongoing needs, including:

  • Purpose-built health and wellness spaces
  • A gym for rehabilitation and movement
  • Accessibility-focused bathroom upgrades

Most importantly, they were able to continue living the life they had planned.

There was no forced downsizing.
No urgent sale of assets.
No dramatic lifestyle reduction.

They could also continue supporting other family members financially, something that remained deeply important to them.

Why this matters

Insurance is often viewed purely as a cost — especially by high-income earners who feel financially secure. But this experience highlights an important reality: your ability to earn an income is often your largest asset.

In this case, the strategy worked exactly as intended. The family’s financial future, lifestyle and dignity were protected at a time when they needed it most.

That is the true purpose of well-structured personal insurance advice.
